  • Total Time: 50 minutes
  • Yield: 1012 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

For the Cake:

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 ½ tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ¾ cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • Gel food coloring (pink or blue)

For the Buttercream Frosting:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp heavy cream (or milk)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Optional Decorations:

  • Sprinkles, edible glitter, or themed cake toppers

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 9-inch cake pans with parchment paper.
  • Mix dry ingredients – In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  • Cream butter and sugar – In a large bowl, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy (about 2–3 minutes). Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract.
  • Alternate adding flour and milk – Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with milk. Mix until just combined.
  • Add the secret color – Remove 1/3 of the batter into a separate bowl and mix in a few drops of pink or blue food coloring. Pour the colored batter into the center of one of the cake pans. Swirl lightly with a toothpick.
  • Bake for 25–30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let cakes cool completely before frosting.
  • Make the frosting – Beat butter, powdered sugar, heavy cream, and vanilla extract until smooth and fluffy.
  • Assemble and decorate – Spread frosting between layers and over the entire cake. Decorate with sprinkles or themed decorations.
  • Slice and reveal – Cut into the cake to reveal the surprise pink or blue inside!

Notes

  • Make Ahead: Bake the cake layers in advance and freeze them for up to a week. Frost before serving.
  • Dairy-Free Option: Use almond milk and dairy-free butter.
  • Fun Twist: Instead of coloring the cake, hide pink or blue candy inside for a surprise burst when sliced!

Enjoy making this Gender Reveal Cake, and have fun celebrating your special moment!
