For the Cake:
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 2 ½ tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 ¾ cups granulated sugar
- 4 large eggs
- 1 tbsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup whole milk
- Gel food coloring (pink or blue)
For the Buttercream Frosting:
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 2 tbsp heavy cream (or milk)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 9-inch cake pans with parchment paper.
- Mix dry ingredients – In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
- Cream butter and sugar – In a large bowl, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy (about 2–3 minutes). Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract.
- Alternate adding flour and milk – Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with milk. Mix until just combined.
- Add the secret color – Remove 1/3 of the batter into a separate bowl and mix in a few drops of pink or blue food coloring. Pour the colored batter into the center of one of the cake pans. Swirl lightly with a toothpick.
- Bake for 25–30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let cakes cool completely before frosting.
- Make the frosting – Beat butter, powdered sugar, heavy cream, and vanilla extract until smooth and fluffy.
- Assemble and decorate – Spread frosting between layers and over the entire cake. Decorate with sprinkles or themed decorations.
- Slice and reveal – Cut into the cake to reveal the surprise pink or blue inside!

- Make Ahead: Bake the cake layers in advance and freeze them for up to a week. Frost before serving.
- Dairy-Free Option: Use almond milk and dairy-free butter.
